RNC Hire New Deputy Director For African-American Engagement

The RNC hired Ayshia Connors, a former congressional staffer, to serve as the deputy director for African-American engagement. Connors is second in command to Ashley Bell. The announcement comes as the RNC shifts its focus to college campuses ahead of the November presidential election. The party’s nominee, Donald Trump, continues to find difficulty connecting with Black voters because of pervasive offensive rhetoric; he’s polling at zero percent in Detroit and Philadelphia, predominantly Black cities. Read more.


Donald Trump Unconvinced Of Central Park 5 Innocence

The case of the Central Park jogger who was brutally raped and beaten in 1989 proved to be polarizing. Much of New York City remained divided in regards to the White female victim and the five teens of color accused of committing the crime. “They should be forced to suffer and, when they kill, they should be executed for their crimes,” Donald Trump said in a 1989 full-page ad he took out just days after the young men were arrested. Years after the Central Park 5 were exonerated, Trump still faces difficulty proclaiming their innocence. Recently he gave a statement to CNN’s Miguel Marquez“They admitted they were guilty. The police doing the original investigation say they were guilty. The fact that that case was settled with so much evidence against them is outrageous. And the woman, so badly injured, will never be the same.” Read more.


African-American Research Center at Harvard to Receive $10 Million Donation

The Hutchins Center for African and African American Research received a $10 million donation geared towards studying the inequalities experienced by disenfranchised people of color in Boston. Research will focus on housing, labor, criminal justice, and child welfare in poor areas. Harvard benefactor Glenn H. Hutchins helped found the center in 2013. Henry Louis Gates Jr., a prominent scholar and Harvard Professor, serves as the Center’s director. Read more.


Jay Z To Produce Kalief Browder Documentary & Richard Pryor Biopic

Two new projects helmed by Jay Z will be released under his new production deal with the Weinstein Company. The first is a documentary on Kalief Browder, a 22-year-old Black male who committed suicide after a three-year stint at Rikers. He was held for allegedly stealing a backpack. TIME: The Kalief Browder Story is scheduled to air in six parts on Spike TV in January 2017. Jay Z will also serve as producer on an upcoming biopic about iconic comedian Richard Pryor. Is It Something I Said, directed by Empire show runner Lee Daniels, will begin production in early 2017. Read more.
