Since opening last summer the musical Hamilton has become a pop culture phenomenon thanks to its effortless combination of hip hop and history; telling the story of Alexander Hamilton like no one had ever done before.

The brain child of Lin-Manuel MirandaHamilton has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success, and is expected to sweep at the upcoming Tony Awards after garnering a record-making 16 nominations. While Hamilton is sure to continue its run to great fanfare, in a couple of months fans of the musical will have to bid farewell to its writer and star who is set to leave the show for good.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Miranda has divulged to members of his inner circle his plans to leave the musical once his contract is up in the coming months. Sources also revealed to T.H.R that there are other cast members whose contracts are also expiring that will be seeking hefty raises, and are prepared to leave if their demands aren’t met.

But why would Miranda want to leave his iconic role on the heels of such success? Apparently the Broadway star would like to focus on other projects. Miranda has landed a starring role as Bert in Mary Poppins Returns, has an In The Heights movie in the works, as well as a potential new musical. At this time it is unclear whether he will reprise his role periodically, which would be a big step back from the eight shows a week he currently does.

While I’m sure Faniltons will be sad to see Miranda go, I’m sure, like us they can’t wait to see him on the silver screen or catch his next musical masterpiece will be.
