With nearly nine months left until the next Presidential election, it becomes harder and harder by the day to determine which candidate is the next best Leader of the Free World. From Bernie Sanders‘ tear jerking ad featuring Erica Garner to Hillary Clinton getting Morgan Freeman to narrate an ad about the work she’s done for minorities, each politician makes a great case.
If you were leaning towards Clinton, professor and political activist, Dr. Cornel West says not so fast! During an interview with CNN’s New Day, West explained that Sanders doesn’t have the backing from Wall Street like Clinton or the media attention like Trump to really articulate all of the work he’s done for African American’s throughout his career.
While John Lewis may have questioned Sanders’s activism, West said that the Senator marched along side of King during the Civil Rights movement and when Jesse Jackson ran for president in 1988, he won the Vermont primary because of Sander’s support.
In the interview, West said that a lot of Clinton’s campaign promises as it pertains to African American’s is based on things that Sander’s has already said. “Sister Hillary Clinton is the Milli Vanilli of American politics,” West declared.
“She lip-syncs, she gives lip service. But when it comes to policy, who supported the crime bill? Who supported, not just the deregulating of banks, but also pulled the rug from under welfare?”
West goes on to add that Sanders’ platform is based on having a “profound integrity, genuine conviction and standing on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. What other higher standard do we have in African American politics?”
