A student from the University of North Texas died after being shot while serving as the designated driver for friends on New Year’s Eve.
Sara Mutschlechner was a junior from Martindale, Texas attending UNT since fall 2013.
Witnesses said Mutschlechner and several friends left a New Year’s party when a black SUV pulled up and exchanged words with them. Apparently the suspects made comments towards the girls and things began to escalate, according to the police.
“Two or three rounds were fired at the young woman’s car, and Mutschlechner lost control and crashed into an electrical pole in Denton,” police said. Just after 2 a.m. when officers arrived, Mutschlechner was found lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to her head.
The investigation is ongoing, police say, and no one is currently in custody.
