Williams was beat by Roberta Vinci 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals.
To concur the Grand Slam, Serena needed to win the U.S. Open, as she has already locked down the French Open, Australian Open, and Wimbledon.
“Williams had not lost a Grand Slam match since June 27, 2014 — and not at the U.S. Open in four years. The loss left her agonizingly short of what would have been the first Grand Slam since Graf in 1988.”
Ironically enough her competitor was only ranked #43 in the world and had never won against Serena.
