In a $1.7 million dollar lawsuit that reached its verdict last June, the Beastie Boys were awarded an additional $668,000 in legal fees earlier this week.
Monster Energy used five of the Beastie Boys songs in promotional videos without the permission from the group.
This attorney fee falls wells short of $2.4 million dollars asked for by the legendary hip-hop group, but still leaves them coming out ahead with a sizable profit.
The two surviving members, Mike D and Ad-Rock, won the case along with the wife of deceased member Adam “MCA” Yauch.
Judge Paul Engelmayer wrote in his ruling that “Beastie Boys opted to pay for, and received, the ‘Cadillac Escalade,’ not the ‘Honda Civic’” of legal representation.
Well, it seems like you get what you pay for! Consider this a victory for artists justifiably searching for credit whenever their work is used for profit without compensation.
