Almost five months after the tragic death of his wife, Carlos Morales, a 29-year-old from Phoenix, Arizona, is focused on carrying on and caring for his four babies. On Jan 16, his wife, Erica, passed away due to severe blood loss after safely delivering the babies, three girls and one boy. PEOPLE magazine recently interviewed Morales about life after his wife’s death.

“I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t speak,” Morales, from Phoenix, Arizona, says about the moment his life turned into a nightmare. “I didn’t know how I would survive without her. But almost five months later, I understand why I am still here. My babies are four beautiful blessings.”

His sorrows pulled on the heartstrings of tens of thousands around the world who donated to his GoFundMe page. Thanks to their support, his page has almost reached its goal of $500,000. Most recently, Steve Harvey was so touched by his story that on Thursday’s episode of his talk show, he surprised Morales with the biggest gift of all: $10,000 for each child to start a savings account for college.

“When Steve Harvey told me that, I couldn’t believe it,” Morales says. “Everything I do is for my children and their future. Education is so important. I worry about money and this just made me feel so relieved.”

The babies, Carlos Jr., Paisley, Tracy, and Erica, are developing normally. Their weight has since tripled from their birth weight of three pounds, thanks to a healthy appetite of formula and baby food. They are also just starting to express emotions.

“They are becoming little humans,” Morales says, laughing. “I just wish Erica could see them grow up.”

Raising four babies is a difficult job, even with two parents. Morales has returned to work and relies on the babies’ maternal grandmother for support. Erica’s mother, Sondra, had promised to move in and help Erica and Morales. However, Erica’s death caused her mother to permanently relocate from Nashville, Tennessee to help raise the quadruplets.

“She said she will be here for as long as she needs to be,” says Morales. “She’s such a protective and loving grandmother. It’s a real team effort. Her mother has even come to help out so the babies now have their great grandmother around as well.”

Morales still misses his wife, but the memories of their love comfort him. The first time they met, their connection was so strong, it overcame the language barrier between them. Morales met Erica in a nightclub in 2006 and only a year later, they eloped to Vegas.

“This wasn’t the plan. Erica was supposed to be here. I still come home after work and look at pictures of us together. I go to her Facebook and I look through our text messages,” he says. “But I know I’ll be okay. I have to be. I have four beautiful children to raise.”
