(HOUSTON) — The humanitarian crisis on our southern border has far reaching ramifications.  Many of the undocumented children have wound up in Houston.

Houston and Harris County so far have received about 3,000 unaccompanied children from Central American who illegally crossed into the U.S.

The Latest News Headlines, Traffic and Weather:

Assistant Harris County Attorney John Odam said local religious leaders have stepped in to help provide for the children.

“To see what could be done and what is being done to assist at the border as well as here in Houston,” he said.

We asked if they posed any kind of health threat.

“No, no,” Odam said. “I am not aware of anything.”

League City, Brazoria County and Galveston County were some of the local communities that passed resolutions saying they didn’t want any of those children in their neighborhoods.

Odam said that has not happened in Harris County, where the children are being absorbed.

“You know, it is a drop in the bucket,” he said. “It is just an insignificant number, really, compared with the overall population of a metropolitan area such as Harris County and the surrounding counties. I have seen no basis for it being — quote — a ‘drain on society.’”

He said the children are being cared for by their families or sponsors.
