(HOUSTON) – Sharon Agee wanted to work in criminal justice. She never expected she might one day become a criminal herself.
The young wife and mother was pursuing a career as an eligibility worker for Harris County Community Supervision and Corrections Department when she discovered some shady business deals between her husband and a college friend.
“I told her, ‘As far as I’m concerned, you can drop dead’,” Sharon said. “About a week later, she overdosed. I believed it was my fault and I had my first nervous breakdown.”

Walking right off the job, she became addicted to cocaine because “it seemed to be the only thing that made me forget the pain,” she says.
But, nothing could hurt more than the downward spiral she experienced when a Harris County Sheriff’s deputy found cocaine in her possession.
After several stints in jail, a suicide attempt and a return to drugs upon the death of her father, a friend encouraged Sharon to reach out to the Star of Hope.
The environment, she says, willed her to clean up her life.
“It was work, but I met people who put so much work into me,” Sharon said. “Star of Hope helped me through the drug addiction, grief issues, hatred and a lot of other pain I had hidden inside.”
She graduated from the Star of Hope Mission’s program in August 2013. Now back on track, she pursued college with the encouragement of her mentors. Today, Sharon is a community health care worker who travels the country in care of the homeless.
Her son’s life has also been touched. Rodrick, who volunteers with his mom at the Star of Hope, became the recipient of the Donald Driver Scholarship through the organization.
He is now studying to become an accountant.
“This is truly the work of God through the Star of Hope,” Sharon said. “My life has been changed forever by this organization and its supporters.”
