The Latest Music, Celebrities and Interviews:

In celebration of the upcoming Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re celebrating famous firsts in Latino history. Today, we’re celebrating the first Latina supermodel…who is none other than Christy Turlington!

Christy Turlington is the 5’10″ model best known for looking gorgeous and pensive in a long-running series of Calvin Klein ads that began in the late 1980s. The ads made her an international celebrity and helped launch her into the top rank of the era’s high-fashion models, alongside names like Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista.

Turlington also earned a bachelor’s degree in comparative religion from New York University in 1999, and is known for her interests in yoga, spirituality, and healthy living. She created the skin care company Sundari in 1999 and published the yoga how-to book Living Yoga: Creating a Life Practice in 2002.

Christy Turlington married filmmaker Edward Burns in 2002. Their daughter Grace was born in 2003, and a son, Finn, was born in 2006. Turlington announced in 2000 that she had been diagnosed with early-stage emphysema, the result of a former cigarette habit; she became an anti-smoking spokeswoman for the Center for Disease Control.
