The Clear Creek Wildcats dominated the south side of town for two months. They started 8-0 and averaged almost 40 points per game. Then, everything went haywire and the Wildcats were tamed with three straight losses to end the season. A first round exit was unbecoming a team that had such potential. Even worse, they lost to the Clear Springs Chargers… again. Since Clear Creek split into two schools (Creek and Springs) in 2007, the Wildcats have never beaten the Chargers in varsity play. The annual Fight for 518 has been one-sided thus far.

Listen to Danny’s Complete Story Below!

Quarterback Jarrett Hildreth says this season will be different. With eight players returning to an already elite offense, the Wildcats have one of the most talented units they’ve fielded in recent memory. Hildreth, a TD Club of Houston All Greater Houston preseason selection, is a mobile quarterback who can knock a flea off a receivers head from 40 yards out. His offensive line is far more experienced. Their youth was on full display during last season’s late slide, especially in their loss to Springs. Now, the offensive line is a position of strength and they’ve got a couple of burners in Kaliq Kokuma and CJ Green at running back.

The defense is young, but fast. Linebacker Kurtis Lester switches from receiver to defense to help guide the unit. They’ve got some playmakers. This is the type of opportunistic defense that can win a lot of games if they can force turnovers and create extra opportunities for the offense.

Coach Darrell Warden says his best players are also his hardest workers. That, he says, gives this team the chance to be special. First things first: they need to win 24-5A and finally get over the preverbial hump in Clear Springs. The team is both talented and capable enough to win the district and make a strong run in the playoffs. Can they get over the psychological hump? As Kokuma puts it, “It’s all mental”. If it is, it’s time to get their minds right.
