As of Tuesday, five new cases of West Nile Virus were reported by Houston’s Health Department.Tuesday’s reports bring the total Houston cases of West Nile Virus to 43.

Harris County health officials still have 16 human cases in the county.

Three people in Houston have died of West Nile and one death from the virus was reported in El Campo.

In terms of other counties surrounding Houston and Harris County, Montgomery County has reported four cases with no deaths while Wharton County has had one case with one death.

Liberty County and Galveston County have both had one case and no deaths reported. Brazoria County and Waller County have all had zero cases thus far.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a potentially serious illness and is believed to be established as a seasonal epidemic in North America. The disease is known to flare up in the summer and continues into the fall.

Some of the symptoms of West Nile Virus include: fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach and back.

Texas has reported the worst outbreak of the virus this year.
