Officials at Bellaire High School sent a warning to students that someone at their school may have tuberculosis.

The school sent letters home to parents on Monday warning them of the possible TB infection within the school.

According to the letter sent home, an individual at the school was being evaluated and treated for a suspected case of tuberculosis. That person was reportedly recovering and feeling better.

Although there were no other students or staff members with reported symptoms of TB, the school and the Houston Health Department contacted anyone who may have been exposed.

The letter also stated that any student who had close contact with the sick individual will be sent a second letter; that second letter will include a consent form for formal testing.

Tuberculosis or TB as it is normally abbreviated, is a common infectious disease caused by various strains of mycobacteria, usually Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Some cases can be fatal.

Although tuberculosis typically attacks the lungs, it can also affect other parts of the body. TB is spread through the air when people who have an active TB infection, cough, sneeze, or otherwise transmit their saliva through the air.
