Opening statements in the trial of a fired Houston police officer are set for Thursday. According to published reports, Andrew Blomberg is the former officer charged with misdemeanor official oppression and faces up to a year in jail if convicted.

Blomberg is allegedly seen in a video beating a teen robbery suspect. A jury of six, four men and two women, plus an alternate was chosen last week. A judge allowed jurors to be individually questioned due to publicity in the case. Video that went viral on the Internet appears to show several officers, including Blomberg, kicking and hitting teen suspect Chad Holley near a business. Holley, then 15, was later convicted in juvenile court of burglary and put on probation.

Additional reports indicate that Blomberg’s attorney states that the video did not show his client kicking Holley and that Blomberg was only involved in the incident for just a few seconds.

Blomberg and three other officers were fired and indicted. He’s the first to be tried.
