West coast hip-hop legend DJ Quik was in Hawaii when an 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck Japan sending 30 feet tsunami waves headed towards the state.

Quik hopped on Twitter early this morning to update his fans on what was going on with messages and photos.

“Tsunami alarms going off…police clearing the streets…” Quik tweeted.

“Please pray for the people in Japan who’s lives are slipping away as we speak. This is a real emergency. The Hawaiian Islands are guaranteed to be inundated by rouge waves in less than 3 hours…”

Around 3pm EST, Quik posted that things had calmed down a bit. “I saw choppers flying beneath me. Servicemen and Women out here are on point. The boats & yachts offcoast are being tossed around a bit, but other than a lil rain, were just waiting for an all clear.”

Quik’s new album, The Book of David, drops on April 20th.
