If you live in Houston and your taxes aren’t done yet, you most likely aren’t alone. The Gulf Coast community leads the latest TurboTax list of the Top Tax Procrastinating Cities — up from last year’s ranking of number two. Chicago, which was number one in 2008 but fell to number four last year, climbs again to take the number two spot this year. New York City retains the number three spot for another year, and continues its record of being on every list since TurboTax began tracking filing data. Austin, Texas — last year’s eleventh-ranked city — moves into the top ten this year taking fourth place, and San Francisco — home of the most procrastinators on last year’s list — rounds out the top five. Seattle inches up to sixth place following last year’s seventh place ranking, while San Diego, ranked fifth in 2009, falls to the number seven spot. The rest of the top ten is unchanged from 2009, with Los Angeles in eighth place, Dallas in ninth place, and Las Vegas ranking tenth. Phoenix, in sixth place last year, is the only community to drop out of the top ten from 2009, taking 13th place this year. Other cities in the top 20 include Atlanta; Philadelphia; Portland, Oregon; Washington, DC; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Charlotte, North Carolina; along with three Florida cities — Orlando, Jacksonville, and Tampa. The 2010 TurboTax list is based on returns filed electronically via TurboTax.com between April 14th and 17th, 2009. The 9th annual TurboTax List of the Top 10 Tax Procrastinating Cities: 1. Houston – (last year number two) – Houston once again tops the list, moving up one spot from last year, proving yet again that everything is bigger in Texas – even tax procrastinating. 2. Chicago – (last year number four) – The Windy City blows back to the top of the list from number four last year. 3. New York – (last year number three) – For the past two years, the Big Apple has been Number Three in tax procrastination. It’s the City that Never Sleeps so what is everyone doing in April? 4. Austin, Texas – (last year number eleven) – This “Capital City” known for a great music scene sings its way back into the top 10 this year, putting Texas in a tie with California for biggest tax procrastinating state on the list. 5. San Francisco – (last year number one) – The Golden Gate City moved four spots this year, going from Number One to Number Five. 6. Seattle – (last year number seven) – Folks in Seattle must be drinking more decaf. They’re doing their taxes just a bit slower, moving up one spot from Number Seven. 7. San Diego – (last year number five) – Despite a warmer than usual winter, San Diegans appear to be spending less time in the sun and surf, and more on their taxes, dropping two spots from last year. 8. Los Angeles – (last year number eight) – For the third straight year, residents of the “City of Angels” are too busy star-gazing to change their approach to tax filing, landing again at Number Eight. 9. Dallas – (last year number nine) – Dallas continues to put off tax time, cruising in at Number Nine for two years running, after years of staying ahead of the late tax filing game. 10. Las Vegas – (last year number ten) – “Sin City” is full of temptations and putting off taxes is a big one. Residents of Las Vegas again wrap up the top 10 list, paying more attention to rolling the dice than rolling in their tax returns.
