Police in Massachusetts said a man who drove his car off a bridge and into the Waters River was distracted by text messaging.

Danvers police said Gerald Maher, 22, was driving alone and using his phone to text message Monday night when he struck a snow bank, swerved into the oncoming traffic lane on the White Fuel Bridge and crashed through a guard rail, landing his 1999 Nissan Altima in the Waters River, The Boston Globe reported Wednesday.

Officers said Maher, who was treated at a hospital and released, will receive a court summons on charges of negligent operation of a motor vehicle and texting while driving.

Police said a diving team from Beverly has been searching the river but has not yet located Maher’s vehicle.
