HOUSTON – Instead of snow, a nasty wintry mix fell over most of Southeast Texas overnight, icing the bridges and overpasses and creating treacherous conditions for drivers.

“Why did we get freezing rain instead of snow? Well, we had a warm layer come into the mid-levels, that melted the snow on the way down, and then it re-froze as ice on the cold surfaces. Unlucky. Mother Nature does what she’s going to do and she spoiled our snow with that warm layer,” 11 News Meteorologist David Paul said.

What’s worse, cloudy skies were keeping temps at or below freezing early Friday afternoon, so none of the ice was melting.

“We’re just not thawing yet. We’re still below freezing everywhere, and it’s just not improving. We need clearing skies and temperatures to go above freezing, and neither is happening yet,” Paul said.
