As you enjoy the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo this weekend, police are out for a new drunk driving crackdown, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.
Officers are out in full force all around Reliant Park and around Houston.
Houston Police Department blood alcohol testing vans are set up at certain locations. Officers in patrol cars are looking for impaired drivers. They will take suspects to the vans to be tested.
It’s all in an effort by HPD and other agencies to keep Houston’s streets safe from drunk drivers.
“We’d like to make sure everyone understands that they have the opportunity to catch a ride home, use a designated driver, a cab or whatever it means but if you do drive while you’re intoxicated and you commit a traffic offense and we get to see you, there’s a good chance you’ll get to see these vans firsthand,” Lt. J.R. Chase said.
For the next 10 days, HPD will be hard at work trying to stop anyone who could pose a danger. It’s all part of the department’s impaired-driving mobilization grant which will put extra officers all over Houston.
Other agencies are also teaming up to help the cause. There are four waves of these impaired driving mobilization grants — the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Christmas and this wave for spring break.
Anyone who is pulled over and refuses to take a breathalyzer test, will be issued a search warrant for a blood sample.
