An emergency shipment of condoms is being airlifted to the Vancouver Winter Olympics athletes’ village after the first batch of 100,000 rubbers ran out.

Some 8500 condoms were sent to the village in three boxes earlier this week and are expected to arrive by the weekend, television network CBC reports.

“When we heard about the condom shortage in Vancouver, we felt it important to respond immediately,” said Kerry Whiteside from the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research.

Some athletes are reportedly collecting the condoms as souvenirs.

“It’s kind of like a joke thing — people just take handfuls of them,” Canadian Olympic team mentor Marnie McBean said.

“They’re out there everywhere … they’re just out and people grab them.”

Free condoms have been distributed at every Olympics since 1992, when Barcelona hosted the Summer Games.
