A Texas City woman was accused of stabbing her 71-year-old boyfriend in the stomach because of a turkey, police said.

Police said the couple had been drinking and arguing throughout the day on Monday. According to Texas City police, when the couple returned home from a shopping trip at 8 p.m., the argument moved inside.

“He told her to get the turkey from the truck. She said, ‘I’m busy.’ Words were exchanged. He said something to the effect of ‘stop being stupid.’ She grabbed a knife and swung at him and hit him,” said Capt. Brian Goetschius with the Texas City Police Department.

Andrew Auzston was standing by the kitchen sink when Tammy Sue Newman, 40, stabbed him, investigators said.

Auzston was taken to John Sealy hospital with a stab wound in his abdomen. He is listed in critical condition.

Newman was not immediately arrested, police said. She turned herslf in on Thursday and is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Her bond was set at $40,000.

Auzston shared a house with Newman for the past year.

Neighbor Lashonia Williams did not know that Newman was accused in the stabbing.

She said the couple lived quietly and kept to themselves. But she’s concerned now.

“I’ll feel a lot better once she’s gone cause you don’t do that to people. He was a nice gentleman. He was a real nice gentleman,” Williams said.

Newman has a history of minor arrests, mainly for public intoxication.

She is now facing a second-degree felony that carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison.

Police said the case is unusual because women, not men, are predominantly the victims in of family violence.   Incidents of domestic abuse increase over the holidays. The Houston Area Women’s Center reported that there were almost 22,000 cases in the city last year.   If you are a victim of domestic abuse or know someone who is, call the Women’s Center 24 hour hot line at 713-528-2121 or call 911 for help immediately.
