INDIANAPOLIS — The Rockets received the best-case scenario news from Yao Ming’s MRI on Thursday, with no damage found other than the strained tendon in his left ankle he suffered in Wednesday’s loss to the Washington Wizards.

Yao will return to Houston and is expected to miss a minimum of a week with an injury the team called “a mild sprain” of his left ankle.

The injury was not in the same area as the stress fracture that required reconstructive surgery. Yao went down twice during his six minutes on the floor against the Wizards, but said he was not sure when he suffered the injury.

He grimaced several times on his way off the court, but was initially considered to have a chance to return to the game.

Either Brad Miller or Jordan Hill is expected to start with Yao out Friday against the Pacers.
