COLLEGE STATION, Texas — As you were, Aggies. A report of a gunman on campus Thursday afternoon turned out to be a false alarm.

Texas A&M University had been on lockdown since a bus driver reported seeing a man with an AK-47 near Rudder Tower.

The following Code Maroon alert was sent at 4 p.m.: “Sighting of armed subject at Rudder Tower. SEEK SAFE SHELTER until further notice.”

After a 90-minute search by campus police and SWAT officers, they determined the person seen by the bus driver was carrying a “replica weapon.”

Students and staff were told at 5:34 p.m. to “resume normal activity.”

Former President George H. W. Bush, his wife Barbara and former First Lady Laura Bush were scheduled to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony at 5 p.m. Thursday at the George Bush Presidential Library, which is also on the A&M campus, though not near Rudder Tower. The event went on as scheduled.
