Filmmaker James Cameron is enjoying his second visit to the “one-billion dollar club.” Citing data from Hollywood.com Box Office, EntertainmentWeekly.com reports that Cameron’s “Avatar” has surpassed the ten-figure mark worldwide, just 17 days after its theatrical debut. Higher 3-D ticket prices, excellent word-of-mouth, and two consecutive holiday weekends that began on a Friday, are all credited with the sci-fi film’s fast-breaking success. The film grossed more than 350-million-dollars domestically over the New Year’s Day weekend. Cameron’s previous big-seller was 1997’s “Titanic,” which scored over one-point-eight-billion dollars around the globe.

“Avatar” — starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver — is in theaters now. “The Los Angeles Times” has estimated that the film’s production costs were in the 280-million-dollar-range.
