Yesterday we saw our Nation hold remembrance for the 15-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
We saw tributes to the fallen with places who decided to plant thousands of flags for each person who passed on that fateful day.
The Occidental College Republican Club memorialized 9/11 by placing close to 3,000 flags out in the campus’ quad.
It was discovered that early Sunday that people decided to vandalize the memorial by crushing flags and tossing them into the trash can.

These people didn’t stop there, they also ripped down filers that were displayed had an image of the the two World Trade Center towers what the message, “R.I.P. The 2,996 Americans who died in 9/11. R.I.P. the 1,455,590 innocent Iraqis who died during the U.S. invasion for something they didn’t do.”

Today is meant to be a day of respect and remembrance for all the victims and heroes of 9/11. Last night, our club sponsored a memorial for the 2,997 who died exactly 15 years ago. Students of all backgrounds came out and planted 2,997 American flags in our quad here at Occidental.

After students found these broken and trashed flags around 1 A.M., they had security stand guard.
It really didn’t matter, guards or students replanting these flags because a few other students walked up to them and broke more flags in front of them.
The club members said, “When we confronted them, those cowards got away as fast as they possibly could. We had thought the storm had passed, however, we were very wrong.”
Next, they said thousands of flags were kicked and smashed and tossed into the trash can.
“Of course, we put them back in the ground,” the club said. “We ask that all students respect the memorial for the remainder of its time in the quad. If you try to destroy it, we will rebuild it.”
The college said that they didn’t know who was responsible for the vandalism, but that they are investigating it.
