It’s back-to-school around the Nation and one barber decided to donate his time for kids who needed haircuts for their first day in a special way.
Courtney Holmes is a barber who lives in Dubuque, Iowa and he normally works at Spark Family Hairsalon, but on this particular day he donated his time at the “Back to School Bash” that had a number of nonprofit and community groups donating to the kids.

Someone at this bash was giving away kid books and that gave Holmes an idea to help the kids in a different way with his haircuts.
It sparked Holmes to grab some books and head to his station where he figured that he would give a reading lesson while cutting hair.
He said, The kids would come in, and I would say, ‘Go to the table and get a book you might like, and if you can’t read it, I’ll help you understand and we can read it together,'”
Since Holmes is a father of two, he knows the importance of reading… Holmes said, “To be honest, I was amazed. The line started with four kids, and next thing I knew it was like 20 kids, all waiting for a haircut and eager to read.”
He ended up having more kids than he had time for so Holmes gave out vouchers for free haircuts at the salon he works at.
He told them to bring a book so they can read to him while they got their haircut.
“We don’t have books at the salon, so I’m bring books from my house, and people have started sending me free books,” Holmes said.
Holmes’ act of kindness has attracted so much attention that the salon he works at is considering making this a monthly event with books… for the kids receiving free haircuts.
