At first flight sight, I was prepared to fly into a show that was laced as a lengthy history lesson…but boy was I wrong. Well…to a certain extent. The Ensemble Theatre’s “Fly” taught me everything I needed to know about the Tuskegee Airmen in an entertaining way. Before the house lights went down, I honestly questioned whether or not I was going to need a blanket and pillow to cozy up with in theater, but it was not that kind of show! Fly captured my attention from the opening monologue and was filled with comedic moments throughout the production.

I’m a big fan of music, so the fact that Kedrick Brown (Tap Griot) tap danced and kept the rhythm of the show marching was dope!

The overall production value was off the chain (as every Ensemble show is). There was a basic set and little to no props used, but it was something that one would never pick up on. In multiple parts of the story, I really believed I was soaring in the clouds with the characters. I won’t give too much away, but it’s amazing how they pulled it off.   Photo Courtesy Of David Bray

The cast and crew did an awesome job of making the audience fall in love with the pilots. It was hard to tell what age KayB is in real life because he played a young boy and an old man spot on! All four actors did a phenomenal job. What made the show interesting was how drastically different each airmen’s personality was. But through their differences…they bonded like brothers! I respect your skills and salute each and every one of you:

Kendrick “KayB” Brown (Chet Simpkins)

Jason E. Carmichael (Oscar)

Nkem Richard Nwankwo (J. Allen)

Joe “JoeP” Palmore (W.W.)

You all played your part well! You fully deserved the standing ovation that was given from the entire audience. Keep breaking legs. Here’s to an awesome run: BRAVO, Fellas! BRAVO!!!

Final Grade: A+ (and I’d DEF wanna experience it again)!
