Wearing sunglasses, as promised, President Obama watched Malia cross the stage to receive her diploma at Sidwell Friends School.

The first daughter is growing up fast. 17-year-old Malia Obama is graduating high school today in Washington D.C.

The 17-year-old will not head directly to the university in Cambridge, Massachusetts after graduating from Sidwell Friends this spring, she “will take a gap year before beginning school,” reads the statement from the East Wing. Instead, she will enroll in the fall of 2017.

However, the 17-year-old is taking a year off before she attends the Ivy League university.
