Last night’s episode of “Black-Ishwas set in front of the centerpiece of every home–the television.

The episode poignantly tackled the difficulty of explaining the current state of race relations to naive children.

For Black families, watching cell phone footage of fatal shootings of unarmed Black men running across the TV screen have become an unrelenting trigger. Now, Bo and Dre argue over how to best discuss this harsh reality with their children.

How do you talk about the world as a family without totally jading your children?

“I don’t want to lie to them. I just want to give them faith in the world,” Bo explains.

“You want to soft peddle the world,” her husband responds.

Anthony Anderson delivers an emotional monologue explaining to Bo the pride and fear he felt when Obama took office,

“We were so proud, and we saw him get out of the limo and walk alongside of it and wave to that crowd. Tell me you weren’t terrified when you saw that. Tell me you weren’t worried someone was going to snatch that hope away like they always do. That’s the real world, Bo.”

Whew. (Pauses writing because I’m getting all choked up again.)

The show took an on-brand comedic approach to the serious issue without bypassing the statistics and facts. These conversations are being had on a daily basis in our homes, and it was groundbreaking to see that real talk played out on broadcast TV.

Kudos to the network for being unafraid and so real.
