Actress Danai Gurira has just been cast in the role of Afeni Shakur, mother of TuPac Shakur in the forthcoming biopic,”All Eyez On Me”.

Gurira is most known for her role in the series, “The Walking Dead”. She recently became an award winning playwright with the stage play, “Eclipsed” starring Lupita Nyong’o.

Shakur is an executive producer on the film as well as the controller of her son’s estate. Here’s a description from Deadline of what viewers can expect from Gurira’s “complex” role.

“Afeni [was a] political activist and member of the Black Panthers, She raised her son to be a voracious reader with a political awareness that informed his development as a street poet.”

The plot of the film will cover, “Tupac’s rise to stardom as a hip-hop artist and actor, as well as his imprisonment and prolific, controversial stint at Death Row Records, where he was steeped in the East Coast/West Coast rap war” added the Deadline report.

Production is currently underway in Atlanta. Similar to 2Pac’s life, the film has already gone through it’s share of controversy. It was originally slated to be directed by John Singleton, then Carl Franklin and now Benny Boom has taken the reins of the film.

Upcoming actor Demetrius Shipp, Jrplays the title role of 2Pac, Jamal Woolard who played Biggie Smalls in the 2009 film “Notorious” reprises his role as the late rapper. Singer and actress Kat Graham will play 2Pac’s close friend, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Keyshia Cole, also a former friend of 2Pac’s has been cast in an unknown role.

Stay tuned for the latest developments! We can’t wait to see if this film is as good as “Straight Outta Compton”!
