After videos accusing Planned Parenthood of illegally profiting from fetal tissue went viral, senators are voting today on whether to block the family planning organization’s federal funding to distribute to alternative health providers instead. Planned Parenthood says that cutting federal funding won’t impact the abortions it provides—most recently 328,000 in a year out of 1 million total in the U.S. Federal money can’t fund abortions unless it is a procedure being provided to rape or incest victims, or if it is for a woman in danger of dying in labor. However, Planned Parenthood maintains its importance and need for funding based on its targeted aid for women in marginalized socioeconomic groups. Read more on the issue at the New York Times.
