The newest boxing movie, “Southpaw” was directed by the “Training Day” director, Antione Fuqa and the Sons of Anarchy writer, Kurt Sutter.
One of the actors that plays in the movie as one of the boxers is Miguel Gomez, aka “Aztec Escobar” and in an interview with No Hablo Espanol, Gomez talks Southpaw.
In the movie, Gomez plays Miguel Escobar and is the rival to Jake Gyllenhaal’s character Billy Hope.

Gomez says, “the way he goes about getting the fight is maybe not the idea way of doing it. It’s realistic to boxing, the way that boxing is set-up. It’s a business, it’s all about marketing. If you don’t market yourself, you won’t be heard.”
Gomez talked about the director Fuqa and tells us int his interview about the first time the two met up.
He’s telling us how Fula said, “We’re going to do this for real. Real punches, you’re going to get in there with real fighters. You’re going to go to training camp as if you were a boxer. You’re going to live a clean lifestyle like a boxer, you’re going to eat like a boxer and t hat’s what we need…
We’re going to get the real cameraman from HBO/Showtime, they film the fights, the real referrees.”
Even though the actors was trained as a legit boxer, the fights were still choreographed, but that was for their safety and for the movie.
When asked about if he got to punch Jake Gyllenhaal, Gomez said, “when the lights were on, and that we had the crowd cheering, you come out of the tunnel with your music and and you get into those moments. The fights so emotional and it’s rooted in so much anger and animosity between these two fighters we went into some dark places and got angry for real and sometimes lost control, but yeah we hit each other all the time, but it came from a place of love and respect.”
Of course, he was asked if he was ever injured and he said YES! Gomez said, “I ran into the camera and cut the back of my head, ind of like Lebron James did.”
You can also find Gomez on the FX series, “The Strain.” The Strain is a show about a viral outbreak that has similarities to and ancient strain of vampirism.
