(Undated)  —  “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” is rising up against the competition at the movie box office.  The “Planet of the Apes” prequel, starring James Franco and Andy Serkis, sold 54-million dollars worth of tickets during its opening weekend, far exceeding industry projections.  Box office experts had predicted the film would open in the 30-million dollar range.  In second place was the family-friendly 3D film “The Smurfs.”  It netted 21-million dollars in ticket sales.  The sci-fi western “Cowboys & Aliens” was third, pulling in 15-point-seven-million dollars.

Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman’s comedy “The Change-Up” opened in fourth place with 13-point-five-million in sales.  “Captain America: The First Avenger” collected another 13-million dollars to round out the weekend’s top five.

Here are the top ten films at the North American box office:

10. “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” (three-million dollars)
