With the help of a $1.5 million grant, Paul Quinn College is planning to build a mixed-use community complex on campus.
Reportedly the funds wil be utilized for both short-term necessities and the development of a mixed-use plan for the neighborhood. The goal is to build a city within a city.
The T.D. Jakes Foundation, in collaboration with Wells Fargo, presented the gift to the HBCU.
According to Paul Quinn College President, Michael Sorrel there is a housing shortage on campus due to the increased demand for students to attend the historically black college.
A larger expansion is planned for the southeast Oak Cliff campus, which will include retail and restaurant spaces, parks, outdoor meeting rooms and classroom facilities, as well as student and family housing. Sorrell stated that there are no renderings yet.
Students and families at KIPP Oak Cliff Academy and Dallas ISD’s school at the college, the Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III Global Preparatory Academy, as well as those in the region, are going to benefit from the development.
Sorrell said that the student accommodation capacity will increase by 300% by the time the concept is fully developed. In the interim, the concept is still in the planning stages. The plan will incorporate a “tiny-homes” neighborhood concept, according to the announcement.
