SUGAR LAND, Texas — A Fort Bend County Deputy and a bystander were shot by bank robbery suspects Saturday morning and investigators said one of the suspects shot and killed himself, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Investigators said a lone gunman robbed the Bank of America at Highway 59 and Grand Parkway and got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

They said he was joined by a second suspect waiting in a white van.

A few minutes after leaving the bank, investigators said Deputy Charles Scott, a five-year-veteran, tried to initiate a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle.

Investigators said the suspects were not ready to go quietly, and one of the suspects opened up the van’s back doors and started shooting.

Scott was shot three times. His sister-in-law, Lyndsay Plata, said one bullet grazed his head.

“You never think anything is going to happen to him so it’s kind of a reality check that something bad could happen,” Plata said.

She said the deputy was recovering at Memorial Hermann Hospital Saturday night and was in surprisingly good spirits.

“He’s already talking about when he can go back to work and that this is not going to slow him down at all,” Plata said.

“He never once mentioned that he had been shot he was just worried about everyone else,” the deputy’s brother-in-law, Richard Plata said.

Nahum Frech said part of the dramatic chase went right through his neighborhood.

“It’s totally unexpected especially around the time it was around 10 in the morning,” Frech said. His family was having a yard sale.

Ralph Marchesano saw the suspects open fire as he drove along W. Airport.

“Two neighbors are diving into the grass… we could hear the ricochets all over the place,” he said.
