US-DIPLOMACY-WOMEN-OBAMA

In conjunction with International Women’s Day (observed on March 8), First Lady Michelle Obama Deputy Secretary Heather Higginbottom honored ten women from around the world with the 2014 Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage Award.

The award was created in 2007, and is distributed each year to women who advocated for human rights, even when doing so puts them in harm’s way. Doctors, lawyers, activists, and others from Saudi Arabia, Guatemala, Georgia, and Afghanistan were among the recipients this year.

“When we see these women raise their voices and move their feet and empower others to create change, we need to realize that each of us has that same power and that same obligation,” Obama said during a ceremony held in their honor yesterday.
