Taking from the lyrics of Jay-Z‘s new track, “Versus,” from his “Magna Carta…Holy Grail” album, Bloomberg Businessweek set out to prove Mr. Carter’s verse that “The truth in my verses, versus, your metaphors about what your net worth is.” What they found was that, in fact, many rap artists are stretching the truth about what’s in their wallets!

Amongst the most notorious, Nicki Minaj, who claimed in her 2013 “Up in Flames” to have made a billion dollars. In fact, she’d only earned $15.5 million in 2012.
Not surprisingly, the most humble is also an artist most in the genre look up to, Dr. Dre, who is worth $370 million–but never really made much of his financial worth lyrically.
