Tina Knowles-Lawson is the matriarch behind Houston’s first musical family in Beyoncé and Solange. As a mother to two of the world’s more famous individuals, Mama Tina found a way early to make sure that both Bey and Solo were okay even as older sister Beyoncé became famous as the lead singer of Destiny’s Child.

In a new interview with Maria Shriver, Mama Tina explained why she put her two daughters in counseling to help cope with the rise of Beyoncé’s celebrity and Solange not feeling left out in the process.

When they were kids, Mama Tina would ensure there was a “Solange Day” every week. She’d take off from her job on Wednesdays and dedicate her entire day and the day’s activities to Solo. Along with those days, she’d make certain that she and Solange would attend counseling sessions to help ease the tension that would sometimes come between them.

“I was very sensitive to that because I always felt like my mom loved my brother more,” Knowles told Shriver. “It was tough because [Beyoncé] was five years older and a little superstar in our city. So, I took them to counseling very early so that Beyoncé could be more sensitive to Solange.”

You can tell. The two sisters are closer than ever, from Coachella performances and on. Nothing is like a Mother’s love, and nothing is like Mama Tina making sure that two queens remained grounded and maintained a loving relationship.

Knowles continued, “I wanted Beyoncé to be more sensitive to the fact that Solange had to deal with being a little bit in her shadow. It made [Beyoncé] way more sensitive and protective and they are still fiercely protective of each other.”
