         OPERATION: STOP SCAMS

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in partnership with AARP Houston hosted Operation: Stop Scams to protect individuals against identity theft and fraud. Every two seconds someone’s identity is stolen due to improper disposal of confidential documents. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and AARP encouraged the community to stay cautious when discarding materials at this free event.

Over 90 members of the Houston area chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority unloaded boxes and bags of paper from 172 vehicles in the parking lot at Brentwood Baptist Church. Documents were dumped in huge trashcans and then emptied into ATA Shredding Services trucks for processing. When the day was 13,520 pounds of paper had been shredded.

“Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s focus on environmental ownership has been a core component of the Launching New Dimensions of Service administration over the last four years,” said International President, Dr. Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson. “Our ability to provide opportunities for our community to dispose of documents properly and recycle the shredded materials in a more environmentally friendly manner are crucial to the long-term sustainability of our local communities and our planet.”

This event was part of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority international program theme “Launching New Dimensions of Service®” under International President, Dr. Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson. The sorority is sponsoring “29 Moments of Service” worldwide leading up to the biennial conference in Houston, TX on July 6-12, 2018, where more than 20,000 members are expected to attend (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc).
