STAY AT HOME ORDER EXTENDED: Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo announced on Thursday that Harris County’s “stay home, work safe” order would be extended until June 10. She’s extending. The order is being extended because Hidalgo does not want to give the community a false sense that the COVID-19 health crisis is over.

DPS OFFICES REOPENING ON LIMITED BASIS: Beginning May 26, Texas DPS can open on a limited basis and by appointment. The DPS’ located in Northwest and West Texas regions can reopen starting May 26. NEW VIRTUAL JOB FAIRS: At his daily COVID-19 update press conference, Mayor Turner announced that the Houston Health Department is hosting two virtual job fairs for 300 temporary positions to increase their workforce to monitor and contain COVID-19. CITY COUNCIL APPROVES $15M FUND TO ASSIST RENTERS STRUGGLING TO PAY RENT: Beginning on May 7, landlords can use the new online portal, HoustonRentAssistance.com. Landlords must enroll in the rental assistance program in order for their tenants to apply for the funds. It isn’t just for apartments but any property that has tenants who have on file.

Renters will be able to go online and apply beginning on May 13 at 10 a.m., must be current on their rent prior to the month of April and have undergone financial hardship such as loss of job-related to the pandemic in order to qualify. Further, they must have a median income of approximately $40,000 for one person or $60,000 for a family of four.

BARBERSHOPS, HAIR SALONS, NAIL SHOPS TO REOPEN FRIDAY: Gov. Greg Abbott announced on Tuesday that the next phase of reopening Texas would occur, beginning with barbershops, hair salons and nail shops to be able to reopen if they choose to do so on May 8. Office buildings, exercise facilities and gyms can reopen on May 18 at 25 percent capacity. All must follow social distancing guidelines.

SOME MALLS REOPENING MAY 5: Although The Galleria is reopening today, certain local malls such as Baybrook, Deerbook, First Colony, Willowbrook and The Woodlands are set to reopen on May 5th. Those malls will open with business hours being from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

PHASE 1 BEGINS: Movie theaters aren’t reopening just yet, restaurants and retailers can reopen with a reduced occupancy of 25%, bars, gyms, and salons are still closed and churches and places of worship can increase occupancy. Masks are optional but you must maintain social distancing.
