Paul Wall and Cricket Wireless teamed together early Wednesday to present a TSU faculty member with a check for her first Mother’s Day.

Through the Cricket Cares philanthropic program, Wall and Cricket were able to present Dr. Bernada Nicole Baker with a check for $5,000, one-year of free wireless service and much needed supplies after she began the process of adopting “Baby Bella,” an infant she took in who, during Hurricane Harvey, was homeless and living in a car with her father.

Dr. Baker, a single-woman who works part-time at TSU and moved to Houston from Chicago two years ago, has been working hard to raise $15,000 for the adoption fees and unexpected child care costs.

Dr. Baker, founder of The Princess Within Foundation, is in the process of adopting one-year-old “Baby Bella,” who at seven months was living out of a car with her father just prior to Hurricane Harvey. After the flooding took the vehicle, Bernada was contacted through a Facebook support group called “Houston Relief Efforts” about helping the father and baby. She opened up her home to Bella while the father searched for employment. After time passed, the bond between Dr. Baker and Baby Bella strengthened and became undeniable. The father agreed that a stable home was best for his daughter and agreed to an open adoption for Baby Bella.
