Jurors deliberated for more than five hours over two days before recommending that Lonnie Franklin Jr. get the death penalty. Adrianna Weingold reports.

Lonnie Franklin Jr., also known as the “Grim Sleeper,” will be sentenced to death, according to the Los Angeles Times.

A Los Angeles jury decided Franklin’s fate on Monday, capping the end to a thirty-year case.

Franklin, 63, was convicted last month in the killings of nine women and a 15-year-old-girl in South L.A. during the crack epidemic, according to ABC 7.

He received the nickname because of a 14-year gap between the killings.

According to the Times, Deputy District Attorney Beth Silverman described Franklin’s brutal slayings: “They were so vicious, they were so calculated, and they were so demeaning. The way these women ended up, half of them naked … all of them in filthy alleys.”

Dale Atherton, Franklin’s defense attorney, tried arguing that the death sentence would only hurt the victim’s families, not bring healing.

CNN writes:

Franklin was arrested in 2010 through DNA technology that did not exist in the 1980s when the initial killings happened. Prosecutors built their case on that DNA evidence, including Franklin’s saliva on many of his victims’ bodies, along with ballistic evidence and the testimony of a surviving victim.
