In Beyonce‘s new controversial song “Formation” she says, “When he f*ck me good I take his ass to Red Lobster, ’cause I slay.” Subsequently, the seafood chain reported a 33% increase in revenue in comparison to the previous year because of Queen Bey’s name drop.
“It’s clear that Beyoncé has helped create some Red Lobster fans, and we are very grateful to her for that,” Red Lobster CEO Kim Lopdru told CNBC.
Well what goes up must come down! The restaurant is now receiving backlash from white patrons who believe the brand is in cahoots with Bey’s politically charged, black power anthem.
“NO MORE RED LOBSTER FOR OUR FAMILY! RACIST OPPORTUNISTS TO THE CORE!” said Chad Long
Another detractor said, “Had my last meal at Red Lobster! They have proven they want to take advantage of RACISM and BIGOTRY so they have nothing to offer me” Dan McCurdy
“You lost another customer due to your alliance with Beyonce and I will post on social media about this too” said Alan Rothman on Reb Lobster’s Facebook page.
The restaurant responded, “Hi Alan, Every artist’s views are their own. Our view is that every guest is welcome to dine and celebrate their special occasion with us. We’d like to talk more with you so please give our Guest Relations team a call to talk further…”
That didn’t stop trolls from continuing to comment: “Every artist’s view is their own?” Condoning killing cops is not acceptable at any level, anywhere, by anybody” said Kim H Hunt.
Red Lobster’s page then became a political debate where mostly African Americans (or members of the culturally diverse BeyHive) accused the Caucasian commenters of showing their “white privileged” and they attempted to clarify Bey’s lyrics.
“Wait? When did she condone killing cops.. She said please stop shooting us… In reference to cops that are quick to shoot for no reason..She never said anything about good law abiding cops” said C Avery Walker in defense of Bey.
“Black empowerment is not white bashing” added Jamarcus Sanders
Red Lobster has barely been able to keep up with all of the negativity. To ensure patrons knew that they weren’t taking sides in the debate, the company made this statement on their social media page: “We were surprised by the mention of Red Lobster in the song “Formation” and did not have advance knowledge of the inclusion nor did we sponsor the song.”
Beauties, was it wrong of Queen Bey to name drop Red Lobster in her song without receiving the restaurant’s prior consent?
