Truth in Reality, a New York based 501(c)3 social advocacy organization pioneering a movement to change the imbalanced media depictions of women of color – especially Black and Afro-Latina women. As part of our efforts to create social change, I’m excited to announce that our inaugural film, Redefining HERstory™ is currently in pre-production! This feature-length documentary aims to re-affirm the power of one of the world’s most exploited demographics of media consumers: Black and Afro-Latina women and girls of color.
Various studies have shown that prolonged exposure to harmful racial media stereotypes has an impact on our thoughts and behavior. When women of color are routinely dehumanized in the media, these images contribute towards the belief that Black women and girls not only provoke violence, but deserve it. Our goal with this film is to engage an array of community members in an open discussion about the harm caused by damaging media messaging, how explicit vulnerabilities within our community are targeted, and how one-dimensional reflections of our stories affect our conceptions of self-love and appreciation of black femininity in more ways than we realize.
