You can always count on Twitter to offer up the best and wittiest in pop culture. One Black Twitter member, Siyanda Moutsiwa, a Botswanan writer and satirist, launched #IfAfricaWasABar to shine light on both the political and the cultural differences in the 54 nations of Africa. Moutsiwa used a classic writing prompt that is typically used in writing workshops to imagine character interaction and applied it to the entire continent of Africa. Moutsiwa said that she thought the hashtag would be a “fun way for Africans to laugh at themselves and each other by putting geopolitics in a comedic light.”

There’s a theme of colonialism, imperialism and corruption running rampant in Africa and the hashtag is such a brilliant satire of the heavy topics, we’re blown away at Moutsiwa’s nuanced witticisms.
“A lot of trending topics on African Twitter tend to be negative; it’s usually people complaining,” Moutsiwa told CNN. “I thought it would be fun to do something we all participated in that was light-hearted and educational for everyone involved. We’re very lucky to have social media now; there were a lot of Africans that did not know about each other [before].”
Moutsiwa explained that she never knew about the stereotypes assigned to the diaspora until social media and now she has the chance to correct those misinterpreted views.
“Africans on social media are dying for opportunities to talk about Africa,” she continued, adding that the hashtag provided “a safe space to do that, without being spoken down to by international media.”
