A new Harris County jail program is helping pregnant inmates and those prisoners with young children transition back into society.

Mentoring Moms tries to ensure that the inmates learn what it takes to be a good mother and to avoid going back to jail.

Jennifer Herring with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office tells our news partner, The Texas Tribune, that they teach participants about furthering their education, beating addiction and other skills that ultimately help them become better parents.

Mentoring Moms is just one of a handful of initiatives the nation’s third-largest jail is using to reduce the rate of repeat offenders.
