Monica Spear Mootz, who was crowned Miss Venezuela in 2004, was found murdered with her ex-husband during a highway robbery. The former couple were vacationing with their five-year-old daughter, who survived the incident. Sources close to the pair say that though the two split romantically years ago, they vacation and spend holidays together for their daughter’s sake.
Mootz was 29 and her former husband, Henry Thomas Berry was 39.
According to officials, the family was stranded on the Valencia-Puerto Cabello highway after a minor accident. Armed men approached their vehicle, and the two locked themselves inside the car. Their attackers opened fire on the victims, killing the parents and injuring the child.
Mootz was a graduate of the University of Central Florida and had American citizenship. After being crowned Miss Venezuela, she starred in a half-dozen Spanish-language telenovelas.
