Locally, the chant went up at a Burger King on Richmond. That “Fight for Fifteen” is explained by supporters like the Reverend James Caldwell. Caldwell says increased wages would save taxpayers in the end, since workers right now are draining hundreds of millions of dollars in government assistance to feed their families.

“The number fifteen, it’s not necessarily symbolic or necessarily a number that’s chosen,” Caldwell said. “It’s just a number that, $7.25, you can’t survive off of.”
