Kelly Rowland Finally Embraces Being Dark-Skinned

Kelly Rowland has finally overcome her insecurities of being a dark skin beauty. Kelly once said in an interview that she “didn’t want to be as dark as she is,” while attending school:

“I went to a predominantly white school and I was the only black girl. I can remember thinking, ‘I don’t want to be as dark as I am – I want to be a little fairer.’ I didn’t want to be me. Tina [Beyonce’s mother] sat me in front of the mirror and said, ‘Girl, look at how pretty you are.’ She made me feel comfortable in my own skin.”

Fast forward to 2013…while attending the annual Essence “Black Women In Power Luncheon” Kelly spoke with Cherise Nicole of CNikky.com about a few things including, Beyonce’s documentary, bad break-ups, and learning to love herself.

On learning to love herself, Kelly says:

“You know what I had great women in my life to help me overcome that. I remember I went through a period where I didn’t embrace my chocolatiness. I don’t know if that’s a word, but I didn’t embrace my chocolate lifestyle. Just being a chocolate, lovely brown skin girl and being proud of that. I remember being out in the sun and I was trying to shield myself from the sun and [Beyonce’s mom Tina Knowles] said, ‘Are you crazy?’ She said ‘You are absolutely gorgeous’ and she just told me how beautiful I was and how rare chocolate is and how gorgeous the skin is, all of this stuff. And I was just like ‘Yeah!’ Like a light went off and so and my mother had me sitting out in the sun a little more, just to be a little more chocolate.”
