One woman’s attempt to show off recently landed her in the emergency room with a butter knife in her esophagus. The New England Journal of Medicine published x-rays of the unnamed woman last week. Doctors Aida Venado and Sarah Prebil explain that she was trying to show her friends how her history with bulimia had left her without a gag reflex. But as she was sticking the utensil down her throat, something made her laugh and it slid all the way down her esophagus. She was rushed to the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, where doctors were able to remove the knife through an endoscopy. She didn’t suffer any damage to her throat or stomach, although she was transferred to a psychiatric unit after the procedure.
